Unicode vs Preeti
Unicode is the standard encoding the web uses. Every Devanagari letter has its own code (क is U+0915), so it displays correctly on any device.
Preeti is an older font that draws Nepali letters on top of English keys. The letter s is shown as क, and g]kfn is shown as नेपाल. Many printing presses and government offices still use it. If you copy Unicode text into a Preeti document without converting it, you get broken characters. This tool remaps every letter, and reorders the ि matra and the reph (र्), to match how Preeti text is typed.
When do you need Preeti?
Most Nepali text today is written in Unicode, which works on every website, phone and modern program. Preeti is older: it draws Nepali letters on top of English keyboard characters, so a Preeti file really contains text like g]kfn that only looks like नेपाल when the Preeti font is applied.
Preeti is still widely used by printing presses, newspapers, offices with older templates, and in desktop publishing software such as PageMaker, which doesn't handle Unicode Devanagari well. If someone asks you for "Preeti text", paste your Unicode text here, copy the result, and set the font to Preeti in your document.
Going the other way is just as common. Text copied from an old Preeti document or PDF shows up as English letters on websites and social media. Switch to Preeti → Unicode, paste it, and you get normal Nepali text you can post anywhere.
Unlike simple find-and-replace tools, this converter handles the parts of Preeti that are typed out of order: the ि matra is moved in front of its consonant cluster, and the reph (र्) is placed after its syllable. It also uses Preeti's special glyphs for conjuncts such as क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, द्ध and द्य. To learn more, read our guide to Unicode vs Preeti.
Frequently asked questions
The output shows English letters like "g]kfn". Is it broken?
No. That is how Preeti text is stored. Install the Preeti font on your computer, or set the font to Preeti in your document, and it will display as नेपाल.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript, so it also works offline once the page has loaded.
Some characters are converted incorrectly.
Preeti has no glyph for some rare conjuncts. Those are written with a halant (्) instead. If a common word converts incorrectly, please report it.
Can I convert Preeti back to Unicode?
Yes. Switch to the Preeti → Unicode tab, paste text copied from a Preeti document, and copy the Unicode result to use on the web.
